An overview of the safe integration of autonomous mobile machines and the requirements placed on staff working alongside them, established by British Standard BS 8646:2023 – Code of Practice.

The course assesses the impact that the Code of Practice has for businesses adopting autonomous machines from commissioning through to their integration into normal operations. It looks at four main areas:

  1. The obligations placed on senior managers and staff during the commissioning process
  2. The requirement to ensure accurate and effective training is delivered to relevant staff
  3. Repair and maintenance routines
  4. Emergency procedures

This course is suitable for those businesses integrating autonomous machines into the workplace, either with responsibilities for bringing this technology into the business, or for setting the training requirements of staff who will interact with them.

The course examines why commissioning and training are critical factors in the safe use of autonomous mobile machinery and considers what areas of training are important to specific groups of staff and how to check it is having the desired effect.

The Code of Practice highlights the importance of repair and maintenance routines to enhance safety and recognises the crucial need to establish clear emergency procedures. The course therefore, describes these requirements and explains how both senior managers and machine operators can achieve compliance.

Each main topic is broken down into individual lessons, which divides the information into manageable chunks. The courses finishes with a final test which is compulsory. You will need to score 80% to pass and you can re-take the test as many times as it takes to pass. Each question is worth one mark. ‘Quick Quizzes’ are included in each lesson and while they do not contribute to the overall assessment score, they help keep you engaged and actively learning, ready for the end of course test.

We suggest you use a PC or laptop and do not attempt to complete the training on a mobile phone. We recommend making a few notes as you progress through the course, but you can use the course grid to navigate back to each lesson if you need to re-read any of the course material before taking the final test. If you leave the course at any point, it will remember which lessons have been completed so you can return to the course later without losing your progress.
