What courses are there and how does online training work?
With the introduction of the new Code of Practice for the safe use of autonomous mobile machines (AMM) in UK agriculture and horticulture, it is imperative that businesses and anyone working with or near these robots makes sure they are properly trained. This also applies to the employees of manufacturers and distributors testing, trialling or commissioning these autonomous machines in the UK.
The Code of Practice published by the British Standards Institution (BS8646:2023) makes it clear that employers are responsible for the safe use of autonomous machines in the workplace and should anything go wrong, they will need to evidence that they have acted appropriately under existing UK law.
The level of training required will depend upon the employee’s role within the organisation and their responsibilities for other staff. It would be important for a senior manager accountable for the integration of autonomous machines to undertake all four courses available, whereas an employee who may not be involved in operating the equipment day-to-day, may only need to do the introductory course.

Introduction to the safe use of autonomous mobile machinery
COST £95 + vat
COURSE LENGTH: 2 hours (approx.)
ACCREDITATION: LANTRA Approved
CERTIFICATION: Yes – valid for 3 years
This course highlights the impact of British Standard BS 8646:2023 – Code of Practice on the safe use of autonomous mobile machinery (AMM) for UK companies.

It is predominantly aimed at those businesses and their staff working with AMM but will also be useful for manufacturers and distributors selling in the UK market. We explain how to achieve compliance with the new regulations and demonstrates best practice to support those working with or thinking about adopting AMM.
The course gives an overview of the key issues that businesses and those working alongside AMM will need to consider when adopting autonomous machines into the workplace. It will introduce learners to the sorts of problems that might be encountered and describes the steps necessary to deal with these concerns to support compliance. The course evaluates what best practice might look like and importantly, it highlights the obligations that employers and employees now have under the new Code of Practice.
The Safe integration of autonomous mobile machinery
COST £95 + vat
COURSE LENGTH: 2 hours (approx.)
ACCREDITATION: LANTRA Approved
CERTIFICATION: Yes – valid for 3 years
An overview of the safe integration of autonomous mobile machines and the requirements placed on staff working alongside them, established by British Standard BS 8646:2023 – Code of Practice.

The course assesses the impact that the Code of Practice has for businesses adopting autonomous machines from commissioning through to their integration into normal operations.
It looks at four main areas:
- The obligations placed on senior managers and staff during the commissioning process
- The requirement to ensure accurate and effective training is delivered to relevant staff
- Repair and maintenance routines
- Emergency procedures
This course is suitable for those businesses integrating autonomous machines into the workplace, either with responsibilities for bringing this technology into the business, or for establishing the training requirements of staff who will interact with them.
The course examines why commissioning and training are critical factors in the safe use of autonomous mobile machinery and considers what areas of training are important to specific groups of staff and how to check it is having the desired effect.
The Code of Practice highlights the importance of repair and maintenance routines to enhance safety and recognises the crucial need to establish clear emergency procedures. The course therefore, describes these requirements and explains how both senior managers and machine operators can achieve compliance.
Safety and risk management for autonomous mobile machinery
COST £95 + vat
COURSE LENGTH: 2 hours (approx.)
ACCREDITATION: LANTRA Approved
CERTIFICATION: Yes – valid for 3 years
A detailed look at safety and risk management processes in relation to British Standard BS 8646:2023 – Code of Practice alongside general best practice advice for those testing, trialling or working with Autonomous Mobile Machinery in the UK.

This course is mainly aimed at those businesses and their staff working with autonomous mobile machinery, but will also be useful for manufacturers and distributors selling in the UK market. We explain how to achieve compliance with the new regulations to support those working with or thinking about adopting autonomous machinery.
The course provides an overview of the risk management process that businesses and those working alongside autonomous machines will need to consider. It also describes the steps necessary to improve safety by assessing the new hazards that autonomous machines pose. The course evaluates what best practice might look like and importantly, it highlights the obligations that employers and employees now have under the new Code of Practice.
You will learn how to distinguish between hazard and risk and how to apply each term when conducting a risk assessment. The course explains how to identify hazards when working with autonomous machines, how to assess the level of risk and how to establish the control measures to manage them.
Operational planning and site design for autonomous mobile machinery
COST £95 + vat
COURSE LENGTH: 2 hours (approx.)
ACCREDITATION: LANTRA Approved
CERTIFICATION: Yes – valid for 3 years
A detailed look at the operational planning and site design considerations in relation to BS 8646:2023 – Code of Practice, with general best practice advice for businesses working with autonomous mobile machines in agriculture and horticulture in the UK.

Site design and operational planning are two important parts of the new Code of Practice and this course covers all the relevant factors a business should consider to ensure compliance. It explains the impact of new regulations and what pre-planning is required when adopting autonomous machines in the workplace.
It looks at the main areas that are highlighted by the Code of Practice such as public rights of way, assessing existing infrastructure, ensuring the site meets the specific limitations of the autonomous machine being adopted and the implications for staff training and commissioning. Mapping, route planning and transport are covered in detail alongside other best practice advice for pre-planning and site design.
The course is aimed at businesses and their senior staff responsible for integrating autonomous machines into the workplace, but it’s also useful for the AMM operator and manufacturers or distributors, advising UK businesses on their safe use.
All courses are based on UK requirements. The content of courses and the training materials provided are not designed to meet specific product or individual requirements and it is the responsibility of you and your employer to ensure you acquire the right skills to perform your specific role. How online training works
By purchasing an online course, the individual taking the course will have immediate access to the content. All lessons are online. Simply follow the prompts at the end of each page to navigate through the course. Learners do not have to complete the course in one go – the software will remember where they got to and record progress so they can carry on from where they left it. They must complete the training within 12 months.
Once the course is completed and the end of course test is passed we send the details of the learner to LANTRA who will issue a digital certificate via email. The certificate is valid for three years after which we recommend updating their training to ensure compliance.
How to access courses
Before purchasing any courses, the user will need the name of the person taking the course, their address including postcode, date of birth and their individual email address.
It is essential to purchase each course in the name of the person who will take the training.
Firstly, go to the AgriTech training page, find the course they wish to purchase and follow the prompts on each page to add the course to the ‘basket’. Once they have all the courses required for this individual, follow the checkout prompts to add the learners details and the payment card.
If the purchaser has set up an account on behalf of an employee, they will need to give them the log in details for that account – the username, email address and password added during the checkout process.
